Most of us shudder at the thought of getting older. We associate advancing age with aches and pains, lack of joie de vivre, and a kind of invisibility in the eyes of the happening generations. The entire world appears to behave as if youth is a major asset in the catalog of factors that make for an agreeable life.
But did you know that people actually tend to become happier as they get older? A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences tells us that by age 50, enjoyment and happiness climb to levels experienced at age 20, and that feelings of worry, stress and anger drop significantly. And age is far more important than things like romantic relationships and good jobs in determining happiness levels. Researchers speculate that older people are more focused on doing things that create immediate joy in their lives, and this of course means they spend more time feeling happy.
So next time you fear the next birthday, tell yourself, Getting older means getting happier!
