Bad Thought: The world is drowning in plastic.
We’ve all seen the pictures of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the largest collection of trash located somewhere between Hawaii and California, said to now be twice the size of Texas, and only one of many such polluted sites across the globe. How depressing. I remember being genuinely moved as a kid when the now famous Keep America Beautiful Ad, featuring the Native American shedding a tear, came out. Pollution made me sad back then, and it continues to be a planetary issue.
That’s why I was glad to see the recent news about serendipitous discovery of a plastic-eating enzyme. Researchers from Britain's University of Portsmouth and the US Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (https://www.cnn.com/2018/04/16/world/plastic-pollution-science-environment-enzyme-intl/index.html). Rather than persisting for hundreds of years in the environment, millions of tons of plastic could now be degraded more immediately.
I realize that the breaking down of plastic releases gases that contribute to global warming, and that efforts to reduce the amount of plastic waste we create are vitally important, but it’s sometimes nice to allow ourselves the thought, Science may find solutions. Let’s take our good news where we can get it.
