Bad Thought: This unpleasant experience will never end.

Updated: Jul 31, 2020

Like everyone, I’m occasionally wakeful in the middle of the night due to some physical discomfort or emotional stress. At such times, the experience seems to stretch out into eternity, going both forward and backward in time, as if I have always been, and always will be, in this very same condition. I think, This unpleasant experience will never end.

Could I be any more wrong? In this case, only hours before, I was totally free from complaint, enjoying the day’s activities and feeling really good. And a few hours after the trouble, I began a new day also feeling fine and looking forward to experiencing the many nice things life has to offer.

Why then do I feel so stuck during moments of discomfort?

After all, the body and mind are in a constant state of flux. On any given day, we go through a number of physical and mental fluctuations, including rises and falls in body temperature and hormone levels, as well as changes in muscle strength and the ability to focus. The ancient Greek philosopher, Heraclitus, said, “Everything gives way and nothing stays fixed.”

Next time you find yourself sleepless because you’re in a mental and physical funk, think, Before long, I’ll likely feel much better. Chances are you'll drift into a peaceful sleep.
